The vast majority of questions are actually suggestions of the form "why not ...?".
And the answer generally is "does it pass the Colossal Cave test?" (do you always answer a question with a question? Why not?).
The Colossal Cave test applies to maps which might not make sense in the real world, such as leaving a room by the east and returning from the new room by going east.
Hence, requests to position new rooms on the map based on their relationship to an existing room do not pass the Colossal Cave test. Similarly, requests to generate the directions of passages by considering the relative position of the room do not pas the CCT.
For the same reason, we can't easily have 'snap to grid' on the map (well, that and the fact that there are 8 standard compass direction, plus in/out & up/down and each box has only 4 sides & 4 corners. So, if someone can show me how best to draw a room with the maximum number of exits ... I'll say "fine, now show me how to draw 20 of those". It just can't be auto-done (imho). If you know better, please let me know).
(1) for small values of "frequently"
